Sad news to share, as reported on YouTube by the Mile High Scale Modeler, the last remaining hobby shop in Colorado Springs is closing. There used to be two HobbyTown locations in Colorado Springs. The north store closed due to the owners retiring a little over a year and a half ago in December 2023.
Now, just over a year after moving to their current location at 687 N Academy Boulevard, the HobbyTown Colorado Springs South store is ceasing operations. This location was also home to the Pikes Peak RC Arena with nearly two thirds of the store taken up by a carpeted indoor radio control racetrack and a large inventory of radio control cars.
The sad trend of local hobby shops closing has been gaining momentum with the combination of high operating costs, the competition from large online sites such as Amazon.com and an overall lack of new interest in the hobby, has become the new reality. The good ole days of the little mom-and-pop hobby stores are becoming a distant memory. It wasn’t too long ago when the HobbyTown locations in Fort Collins and Longmont closed their doors.
With the closing of the Colorado Springs location, this leaves the Colpar’s HobbyTown locations in Lakewood and Aurora as well as the HobbyTown stores in Littleton and Westminster as the last remaining plastic modeling hobby shops in Colorado. We need to make a point to patronize the last remaining hobby shops that are still around, they need to know we still support them.
