British Leyland Field Truck Build — Montgomery’s Mobile HQ in Africa Commonly Called “Monty’s Caravan”

I’m excited to share a few photos from my latest build: a British Leyland truck, featuring a fully detailed interior housed inside the command structure once used by Gen. Bernard Montgomery during the African campaign.

Historical Inspiration & Reference Details

This particular setup has a unique backstory—the command module was originally part of an Italian command truck captured by the British, later retrofitted onto the Leyland for Monty’s use. I used small magnets to secure the removable roof, so the interior can be easily revealed and explored. The structure included pictures of Monty’s opponents hanging on the walls.

Kit Overview & Build Features

Since this was an IPMS Review kit, I’ve included a link to the full review below, so I don’t repeat myself. Instead, I’ll highlight some of the touches added using reference photos from the three surviving vehicles used by Montgomery:

  • A horseshoe for luck
  • Detailed maps and an extra ink bottle
  • Bottles of wine
  • Desk lamps with tiny clear bulbs
  • Even a full bathroom setup
  • And yes… a sofa. Never thought I’d be assembling living room furniture in miniature!

From Aircraft to Armchairs: A Modeler’s Unexpected Journey

Though I usually stick to building aircraft, this kit was an absolute joy to assemble. Beautifully engineered, highly detailed, and worth every penny. I had a blast bringing it to life.

Check out the photos below—and feel free to reach out with comments or questions. Thanks for looking!
